You may remember an alert on 21 May regarding a number of criminal damage incidents across Yateley and Blackwater, where graffiti had been left on various fixtures and buildings in the area.
The damaged property included Yateley Green's public toilets, outdoor gym equipment, picnic benches, fences, walls, garage blocks, and the premises of a local Yateley charity.
An investigation was launched and six victims were identified, including Yateley Town Council, who are responsible for many of the damaged items. Enquiries were carried out, including CCTV reviews and witness statements, and a suspect was identified with assistance from one of our local schools.
The suspect, a 12-year-old male from Blackwater, was interviewed at Yateley Police Station and admitted responsibility for all six offences of criminal damage.
We have worked closely with the Youth Offending Team, and the male will now take part in an intensive Youth Diversion Programme. The programme is designed to address behaviour at an early stage and reduce the likelihood of further offending, while avoiding unnecessary criminalisation of a child. It provides support, education and positive intervention to help divert young people away from criminality.
